Peru Amazon Cruise The Greatest Voyage in Natural History The mystique and allure of the Amazon beckons those who are fascinated with the natural world. It is home to the most biologically diverse wildlife on earth with multiple species of primates; thousands of colorful, tropical birds and butterflies; myriad insects, reptiles and amphibians; and waters rich with an abundance of fish and aquatic mammals such as the river dolphin. Over 25,000 plant species have been identified in Amazonia, and it is hypothesized that at least that many remain as yet undiscovered. This voyage takes us deep into the heart of the world’s greatest wilderness through an ever-changing vista of lush tropical rainforest. Our riverboat, created to remind us of a classic 19th century expedition vessel, plies these waters with comfort, elegance and attentive service, affording superb wildlife viewing from her observation deck. We begin the journey in Iquitos with a brief city tour after a spectacular flight from Lima, over the Andes. Navigating upriver on the mighty Amazon, we explore several of its tributaries. Our expert naturalist guides accompany us on daily excursions aboard small, motorized boats or on trails through the rainforest. Their ability to spot wildlife is uncanny, though by the end of our journey, we’ll be astounded at our own prowess. Evening excursions allow us to spot many nocturnal creatures, such as caiman, missed during the day. Along the way, we will visit the ribereños (river dwellers) in their villages and, perhaps, have the chance to meet a shaman or visit a school. We return to Iquitos for our flight to Lima where we join our guide for a private tour of the colonial sector and Larco Herrera Museum. Brief Itinerary Days 1-2 : Evening arrival to Lima and fly to Iquitos the following morning. Board the vessel: La Esmeralda, La Turmalina, La Amatista or La Turquesa; and begin the voyage up the Amazon River. Day 3 : Cruise to the junction of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers watching for fresh water dolphins en route. Day 4 : Explore small tributaries by canoe. Continue up the Ucayali to Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. Day 5-6 : Canoe and walk in a seasonally flooded forest observing birds, monkeys, black caiman and manatee. Visit ranger station in Pacaya-Samiria Reserve and take a short hike to explore the forest. Day 7 : Navigate downriver along the Ucayali, scout the Tapiche river and look for nocturnal wildlife. Day 8 : Visit a river village along the Amazon, meet with a local shaman and learn of the importance of shamans to the people of the Amazon and head back down river to Iquitos. Day 9 : Farewell breakfast with the crew before disembarking to fly to Lima. Tour the city and overnight in the Peruvian capital. Day 9 : Fly home, arriving later today.
