Hiking the Incredible Huayhuash
A Circuit Through Peru's
Most Spectacular Range

Join us on what is indisputably the most spectacular trek in the Andes — the exciting circuit around northern Peru’s Huayhuash (pronounced why wash) range. Less than 20 miles in length, the Huayhuash contains eight peaks over 19,000' in elevation, making it the second highest cordillera in the country after the Blanca. The icy, knife-edged crest of these mountains is so steep and compact that we enjoy continuous views of towering, ice-clad peaks such as Yerupajá (21,765'), Peru’s second highest summit, Jirishanca (19,995') and Rondoy (19,290'). Huayhuash was declared a Reserve zone by the Peruvian government in December of 2002 in order to protect its ecosystems. One of the least traveled Andean ranges, this is also one of the most physically demanding treks in Peru with lots of elevation gain and loss as the route crosses 7 passes in 12 days (all are over 15,000' in elevation—the highest reaching 16,400'). The trek averages approximately 8.3 miles per day, but one day we cover 13 miles, following rocky and sometimes steep trails. A rest day is also included to allow us to adjust our pace if necessary for acclimating or due to weather conditions. June and August are ideal months for this adventure as the weather is typically clear and dry, and the snow from the season’s rainstorms has melted off the highest passes. Of course, the rewards are worth the effort - spectacular mountain views, a dozen azure, emerald or turquoise-colored lakes, Andean wildlife such as the vizcacha and condor, typical villages, wildflowers, and some of the few remaining queñual forests!

Brief Itinerary

Days 1-2 : Fly to Lima and travel to Huaraz.

Day 3-4 : Full day in Huaraz for acclimating with a hike in the Pukaventana area. Drive to the trailhead and first camp near Matacancha. Afternoon hike into the Rondoy gorge.

Days 5-6 : Trek over Cacananpunta Pass (15,420') and descend to Mitucocha Lake before crossing Punta Carhuac Pass (15,250') and camping by Carhuacocha.

Days 7-8 : Ascend Carnicero Pass (15,090') or, the more demanding alternative, Siulá Pass (15,750') and continue down to the estancia Huayhuash. Cross Portachuelo Pass (15,580') and hike to Viconga and the local hot springs.

Days 9-10 : Cross the highest pass of the trek, Punta Cuyoc (16,400'), and begin a two-day descent along the Huanacpatay gorge followed by the climb along the Huancho gorge to Piquicorral.

Days 11-13 : Hike over Tapush Pass (15,740') and onto the pristine turquoise lake, Jahuacocha, where we camp for two nights enjoying incredible views of the western walls of Yerupajá peak (21,765').

Day 14 : Ascend through the gradual Pacllón valley to the last pass of the route, Pampa Llamac (14,100'), and continue to our camp near the community of Llamac.

Days 15-16 : Meet private bus and return to Lima. Fly home.
"The Huayhuash Trek was more beautiful & enjoyable than I ever imagined it would be. It is a trip that is not for everyone, but the rewards of viewing this incredibly beautiful area are worth the effort. The itinerary was well planned - allowing for a leisurely pace so that we could enjoy the views and the flowers along the way. Cesar was an excellent guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area, wildlife and plants and shared his knowledge with us. He was always friendly, enthusiastic, had a positive attitude and made sure everyone was comfortable and happy."
