JULY 8
- 23, 2005 VILCABAMBA TREK
Selected as one of the World's Top 25 Trips by National Geographic
Adventure Magazine (Nov 03). This is a fantastic off-the-beaten-path
trek, where we're unlikely to see other hiking groups as we
descend into one of the deepest canyons in South America,
the Apurimac, and then climb back out to some of the most
pristine Inca sites around, primarily unexcavated and untouched
- Choquequirao and the recently found Cerro Victoria. The
mystery surrounding these sites were featured in the Feb 04
issue of National Geographic Magazine. Join us on this remote
hiking adventure. Departure is guaranteed to operate. Click
here for more details.
AUGUST
13-28, 2005 HIKING THE INCREDIBLE HUAYHUASH
Southwind is returning by popular demand to Peru's Huayhuash.
Another seldom visited region in the second highest range
of the Peruvian Andes. This rugged, high-altitude trek offers
spectacular mountain views, typical villages, and Andean wildlife
such as the vizcacha and condor. Join us on one of the most
spectacular, rewarding, and physically demanding treks in
South America. Group forming. Deadline to sign-up is June
13th. Click here for more
details.
ECUADOR
- SAFE TO TRAVEL
After a week
of increasingly confrontational demonstrations by Ecuadorians
angered by accusations of corruption and unpopular economic
policies, lawmakers removed President Lucio Gutierrez from
office. Alfredo Palacio, the country's elected vice-president,
was appointed to the presidency on April 20th. Tourism activities
were not affected and our local office in Quito reports that
events have calmed and returned to normal.

What's a Chaski?
"Chaski" refers to the messengers of the Inca who would run
along the kingdom's vast network of trails delivering vital
information. News, intricate communication, quipus - knotted
strings conveying regional statistics or perhaps exotic foods
were relayed between Chaskis as they made their way towards
the Incan capital of Cusco.
