Trekking

South America remains relatively untraveled and unspoiled because so much of the land’s richness and diversity is not within easy reach of the uninquisitive traveler. The rewards for the intrepid are great! From breathtaking, top-of-the-world scenery to colorful, down-to-earth native cultures—from Andes to Amazon—the continent is an endlessly fascinating and exhilarating destination. What better way to savor the feel and flavor of a place than by foot allowing for close contact with the land and its people?
In addition to the following list of scheduled treks, Southwind offers a selection of custom treks for private groups with as few as 4 participants featuring more remote and challenging routes.
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Thousands of miles of roadways crisscrossed the Inca kingdom connecting Amazon jungles, highland valleys and the Pacific coast to Cusco, the Inca capital. Used to transport goods, move people and facilitate communications, these highways rivaled the ancient Roman system in terms of extent and accomplishment. Many sections were destroyed while others lay forgotten, engulfed by dense vegetation. Such was not the fate of one 25-mile stretch connecting the Sacred Valley to half-a-dozen impressive Inca sites bearing intriguing names like Forever Young and Town Above the Clouds. Known as the Inca Trail, this stone-paved route leads directly through the Sun’s Gate into Machu Picchu. view details

Urubamba Weaver's Trek
Trekking the trails of the Urubamba Range is a walk back in time. This region is populated with scattered Quechua communities, enclaves of traditional culture that have, thus far, escaped the encroachment of modern society. Like the rugged peaks, in whose shadows they live, these gentle, hard-working people form the backbone of this country. By graciously welcoming us into their pueblos, they allow us to watch this traditional craft and glimpse a simpler life, a world apart from our own! view details

Highlands Full Moon Trek
The Ecuadorian Andes are an ideal trekking destination. Scattered beneath the icy summits of the country's eleven highest volcanos are azure lakes, groves of quiñuar trees and quaint Andean communities. Discernable for miles, these solitary frozen giants dominate the horizon. They tower above the surrounding fertile valley, named the Avenue of the Volcanos by the German naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt. This active program takes us through the heart of the central valley, promising great hiking and spectacular views as well as opportunities to visit rural settlements and meet with indigenous people who continue the traditions of their ancestors. view details

The highlight is a horse- and porter-supported trek to the remote ruins of Choquequirao, the lesser-known sister city to Machu Picchu that is still being uncovered and receives only a fraction of the visitors. First class camping is complemented by nights in a mountainous jungle lodge, along with hotel stays at elegant properties in Cusco and Lima. view details
